NGATHI | About us |
Zekhala Charcoal is a proudly South African and Eastern Cape brand of charcoal that specifically rids black wattle in community owned lands while converting it to charcoal. The spread of black wattle has the ability to reduce large areas of biodiversity and destroy pristine wetlands. Black wattle is one of the most widespread and significant invasive alien trees in South Africa. Black wattle grows rampant in our Province much like ikhala/aloe that grows in abundance in our Province. The Eastern Cape in our opinion is the most beautiful Province that South Africa has to offer, and we are fortunate to have it be a place we call our home.
UMBONO | Vision |
- Job creation
- Stay transparent
- Steady growth
- Remain a family owned and managed company
- Empower communities
- Keep it simple
The secret weapon behind filling every Zekhala charcoal bag are the community members that are employed by Greenwood Projects. As a partner to Zekhala Charcoal, Greenwood Projects understands the language of the Eastern Cape, its traditions and cultures and as well as the wealth of knowledge that can be gained from taking in and learning from the ecosystem we are fortunate to be a part of – the art of charcoal making… It’s by no means a clean or easy industry but our goal remains that of ridding alien invasive species trees, to do our bit to improve the prospects of water security for the next generation and create employment for the most vulnerable. We empower our employees to run production sites like their own businesses as the ultimate goal is for them to own the entire production process of charcoal and be confident employers who subsequently increase employment in the province of the Eastern Cape.
UKUDALWA KWEMISEBENZI | Job Creation |
Our human capital intent from the onset of the business is to only employing South Africans and our strategy is to support the locals in the community we operate in by sourcing our human capital from the area. The Eastern Cape has the highest level of poverty and unemployment in our country making it imperative to support those that need us most. We currently employ 20 people in our production team, which will increase as our production of charcoal grows to meet the demand.
We have committed to only employing previously disadvantage females in the packaging area of the business.
Our mission is to empower communities to start their own charcoal operations to uplift the most vulnerable.
